Katrine Ellefsen

Katrine Ellefsen, born in Oslo in 1971, holds a Master’s Degree (2000) in constructed textiles (Medium – and Material-Based art) from the Oslo National Academy of the Arts. She also studied for a short period at the Royal College of Art in London.
She makes textiles, objects, wooden trolleys and a mixture of artifacts as a response to the world. In her practice she merges found objects with her own creations. Performance is a new tool for her to challenge.

A fascination for people and behavior, seen through a philosophical and psychological lense, is underlying her studies of human nature. The comical and the little bit «off», in everything, the sidetracks and the less fortunate — and perhaps sometimes also a bit gaudy and tacky — can describe her aesthetic style. She likes to break free from the obvious palettes of color as a tool to set a tone of style — or the lack of it.

The pretentious and banal, ambiguities and contradictions, as well as irony and humor are important aspects of her visual language.
Whether it is installation, sculpture or textile pieces, her work can be seen as props or tools to better handle life’s odd and diverse moments.
