The impact of artists practices – Science & Speculation
Artists Toril Johannessen and Jan Freuchen in conversation with author and art critic Orit Gat (New York). Freuchen and Johannesen presented their work, followed by a conversation about their practices.
Toril Johannessen’s (b. 1978, Norway) practice often engages in methods and source material from the domains of science. Thematically her work spans a wide range of interests, from visual perception to linguistics; impossible energy cycles, alternative methods for time measurement; optical illusions and spatial disorientation. By combining scientific fact and the history of science with her own investigations and concepts, she applies a critical and subjective view on the impact of modern science on various forms of knowledge production. Johannessen received her MFA from the Bergen National Academy of the Arts, Norway (2008), and in 2011 she was a student at The Mountain School of Arts, LA.
Jan Freuchen is an artist working with sculptures, collages, drawings and curatorial projects. He holds a degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Bergen, Norway and Städelshule, Frankfurt am Main. Freuchen recent exhibitions include Seeable/Sayable, Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo (2016), MAKE DEFAULT, HKS, Bergen (2016) and Thetaville, Fotogalleriet, Oslo (2013). His sculpture project Columna Transatlantica, commissioned by Norwegian National Tourist Routes and situated by the Atlantic Road at Møre was completed last year. Together with Sigurd Tenningen he is the curator and editor of Game of Life, a four-part exhibition and publication series at Kristisansand Kunsthall. Freuchen also runs the independent art book publisher Lord Jim Publishing.
