Anette Gellein

Anette Gellein (b. 1995, Sola, Norway) is a multidisciplinary artist working at the nexus of visual art and film. Gellein’s practice revolves around themes of power, politics, sexuality, gender, and emotion. Drawing inspiration from camp and horror, German Expressionism, literature, avant-garde cinema, and queer politics, they create visual poems that reveal hidden emotional landscapes.

In 2024, they released Dyke Dreams, a 16mm triptych, selected for Artists’ Film International 2025 by Tromsø Kunstforening. They are currently developing Stoner Queen of Hearts, the final part in a trilogy that includes their previous films. This experimental costume drama, set in a fictional local monarchy, will premiere at Kunsthall Stavanger in February 2026.

They earned a Bachelor’s degree from Nordland College of Art and Film and a Master’s degree in Performance Art from the Glasgow School of Art in 2019. Since returning to Stavanger in 2019, they have been active in the local art scene, co-running the artist-run space Studio17 from 2020 to 2023 and co-founding the queer arts festival Hot House.
Their work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally at venues such as Kunsthall Oslo, Kunstnernes Hus Kino, Tromsø Kunstforening, Galleri Opdahl, Atelier Nord, TENT Rotterdam, Lydgalleriet in Bergen, and the Liaison of Independent Filmmakers in Toronto. Gellein has also participated in film festivals including the Oberhausen Film Festival, Oslo Pix, and the Arctic Moving Image & Film Festival (AMIFF).
